Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach Fall Events 2026: A Two-Town Calendar

On Saturday, October 24, Pumpkins in the Park at Pismo Beach's Dinosaur Caves Park ends at 1 p.m. At the same hour, the City of Arroyo Grande opens its Halloween Carnival at Elm Street Park. One event ends just as the other starts. For a household in Vista del Mar, it plays like a planned double feature.

That hand-off is the pattern for the whole season. From mid-October through Thanksgiving weekend, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande each run a full fall calendar, and they almost never book the same hours. Most residents follow one town's schedule. A neighborhood between the two can use both.

The Address Sits Between Two Calendars

San Luis Obispo County planning documents place The Heights at Vista Del Mar "at the current terminus of Castillo Del Mar Drive, immediately southwest of State Route 101, southwest of the city of Arroyo Grande." The county staff report on Tract 3048 describes 22 residential lots of roughly one to two acres around a 14.9-acre common open space parcel.

That location explains the rest of this post. The Arroyo Grande Village is on one side and the Pismo Beach pier is on the other, and each town runs its own fall calendar.

October 16 to 18: The One Weekend the Calendars Collide

The season opens with the only real conflict. The 80th Annual Pismo Beach Clam Festival runs October 17 and 18, and admission is free. The Clam Festival Parade starts on Price Street at 10 a.m. Saturday. Local restaurants then compete in the Clam Chowder Cook-Off for Best Local Clam Chowder and a People's Choice vote. Cook-off tickets went on sale September 1 through 805tix, and the visitor bureau says they traditionally sell out. A Clam Festival-themed Wine Walk opens the weekend downtown on Friday, October 16, from 5 to 9 p.m.

"By 1993, the last legal-sized Pismo clam was recorded at the beach. The festival kept going."

That is how Experience Pismo Beach tells it. In 2020, researchers from Cal Poly's Ruttenberg Lab documented thousands of juvenile Pismo clams returning to the shoreline, a recovery the visitor bureau says is still underway. The city and the festival both date to 1946. Eighty years on, the festival celebrates a clam that is actually back on the beach.

The conflict is the art tour. The free, countywide Open Studios Art Tour holds its second and final weekend on October 17 and 18, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Those hours overlap the festival almost exactly, so this is the one weekend when a Vista del Mar household has to pick a direction. One way to split it is the parade Saturday morning and studios Sunday. The Clark Center adds a Saturday afternoon option, with Roger McGuinn at 2 p.m. on October 17.

October 24: The Hand-Off Hour

After that weekend, the two towns stop competing. Pumpkins in the Park runs 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 24 at Dinosaur Caves Park, 2701 Price Street, with pumpkin decorating, games, crafts, bounce houses and a costume contest.

The City of Arroyo Grande's announcement lists its Halloween Carnival for October 24 and 25, from 1 to 7 p.m. both days, at Elm Street Park, 1221 Ash Street. The city lists food trucks, a free Trick-or-Treat Trail, carnival activities, a free movie Saturday and a magic show Sunday.

Put together, Saturday runs from a morning by the coast to an afternoon in Arroyo Grande, with no overlap. Sunday is all Arroyo Grande, and the magic show makes it a different day from Saturday's movie.

October 31: Halloween Returns to Branch Street

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. The Arroyo Grande Village has a merchants' trick-or-treat from 4 to 6 p.m., listed by The Gallery at 213 E. Branch Street.

Branch Street will look a little different leading up to it. City tree trimming started October 7 on Branch Street from Traffic Way to Crown Hill. The same crews are also working on Grand Avenue from east of Oak Park to Highway 101 and on the north side of James Way between Oak Park Boulevard and Equestrian Way. The city expects the work to take three to four weeks, with minor disruptions. Counting from the start date, crews could still be on Branch Street right up to Halloween week.

One new stop in the Village is a railroad-history kiosk at Crown Hill and East Branch Street, which the city dedicated on October 4. It sits at the same end of Branch Street as the tree work, a short detour for anyone heading to the trick-or-treat.

November: Pismo Takes Saturday, Arroyo Grande Takes Sunday

In November the pattern settles into a weekly rhythm. On the weekends when both towns have something, Pismo Beach mostly takes Saturday and Arroyo Grande takes Sunday.

Date Day Event Town and venue
Nov. 1 Sunday Art in the Park Pismo Beach, Dinosaur Caves Park
Nov. 7–9 Sat–Mon Sand Art Festival Pismo Beach Pier
Nov. 10 Tuesday Swan Lake: Symphony of Lights Clark Center
Nov. 11 Wednesday Veterans Day tribute, 11 a.m.–noon Pismo Beach Pier
Nov. 14 Saturday Marching Band Review, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Pismo Beach, Dolliver Street to Pier Plaza
Nov. 15 Sunday Lions Club Turkey Trot, 2–4 p.m. Arroyo Grande High School track
Nov. 21 Saturday Holiday Cheer Market, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Shell Beach, Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa lawn
Nov. 21–22 Sat–Sun USA Surfing Pismo Beach Pier
Nov. 24 Tuesday The Carpenters Songbook Clark Center
Nov. 28 Saturday Christmas by the Sea, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Downtown Pismo Beach
Nov. 29 Sunday Big Ditch Holiday Market, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Arroyo Grande Village Car Corral

The weekend of November 14 shows the pattern clearly. The Pismo Beach Marching Band Review fills Saturday morning on Dolliver Street and finishes at Pier Plaza. On Sunday afternoon, the Arroyo Grande Lions Club holds its 49th Annual Turkey Trot at the high school track. The city lists the entry fee as $5, which includes a T-shirt and refreshments.

Thanksgiving weekend repeats it. Christmas by the Sea, a downtown holiday event hosted by the Pismo Beach Chamber, runs on Saturday, November 28. The next day, the Big Ditch Holiday Market fills the Village Car Corral with local artisans, food trucks and live music by Ryan Jenkins. That gives two holiday events on back-to-back days, one in each town. A week earlier, on November 21, the free Holiday Cheer Market fills the oceanfront lawn at Dolphin Bay in Shell Beach.

The pattern has exceptions. The Sand Art Festival runs into Monday, November 9. USA Surfing takes both days at the pier on November 21 and 22, and the visitor bureau's calendar still says details are to come. Pismo's Holiday Harmony tree lighting is set for December 4, after this calendar ends.

The Weeknights and the Quiet Mornings

Weeknights work differently. The Clark Center puts Shanghai Ballet on Tuesday, October 20, Swan Lake: Symphony of Lights on Tuesday, November 10, and The Carpenters Songbook on Tuesday, November 24. That's three Tuesday shows with no event in either town competing for the same night.

For a quick dinner before a show, Press Quesadilla Grill opened its second location at 929 Rancho Parkway on July 27. KSBY reported a menu of quesadillas, salads, bowls and burritos.

Nearby, the James Way Oak Habitat and Wildlife Preserve runs from Rancho Parkway to Meadow Way. The city's parks inventory lists it at 75.02 acres with two miles of walking paths. It's an easy fit for the weekend mornings between the Clam Festival and the Turkey Trot when neither town has anything scheduled. A regional trails brochure also lists the Los Robles Public Trail along Rancho Parkway between James Way and Camino Mercado. The city's 2026–36 capital plan schedules a new footbridge and kiosk at the James Way Open Space entrance for fiscal year 2027–28, and it notes that capital plan projects aren't guaranteed. For this fall, the preserve stays as it is.

Living between two towns affects more than the weekend calendar. It also shapes how buyers judge a home here when they compare it with homes in Pismo Beach and in Arroyo Grande.
